Born to Run

Meine Leidenschaft für Bruce Springsteen und seine Musik habe ich hier ja schon mehrfach erwähnt, ich bin mir aber nicht sicher, ob deutlich geworden ist, wie weit das eigentlich geht. Wer das schon immer mal wissen wollte, hier ist der Beweis, dass ich absolut verrückt bin :) Aber ich fange besser am Anfang an...
 

I have mentioned my passion for the music of Bruce Springsteen before but I don't think that what I have written here really shows how far my love for this brilliant songwriter and musician goes. If you are still wondering, here is proof that I am totally and absolutely crazy about him :) But let's start at the beginning...

Bruce Springsteen's autobiography "Born to Run" was published last week, and he is now on a book tour to promote it (as if he needed that...). One of the stops was Seattle where he appeared yesterday at the Elliott Bay Book Company. 1,200 tickets were available, and of course they sold out on the very first day. I was very lucky and managed to get one. We only paid the cost of the book, and that admitted the ticketholder and one extra person. We left early yesterday morning and were in line outside the bookstore by 9.30 am. It was extremely well organized, everybody was very friendly, and it is always great to meet other Bruce Tramps. We all knew that our meeting with Bruce would only last for a few seconds but this stopped no one from coming or enjoying every single minute. People flew in from all over for this, so if you think I am crazy for driving two and a half hours down to Seattle for ten seconds of Bruce, then what would you call the lady who flew in from Boston just for this and was taking the 11 pm flight back home with a layover in Chicago?!

Bruce Springsteens Autobiographie "Born to Run" ist letzte Woche erschienen, und er tourt im Moment durch die Buchhandlungen, um für das Buch zu werben (als ob das nötig wäre...). Gestern war er in Seattle bei der Elliott Bay Book Company zu Gast. Es wurden 1.200 Tickets angeboten, und natürlich waren die schon am ersten Tag ausverkauft. Ich hatte großes Glück und habe eines bekommen. Und wir haben dafür auch nur den Preis des Buches bezahlt, dafür konnte dann der Ticketinhaber mit einer zusätzlichen Person an dem Event teilnehmen. Wir sind gestern morgen schon ganz früh losgefahren und haben uns dann um 9.30 Uhr in die Schlange vor der Buchhandlung eingereiht. Die ganze Sache war sehr gut organisiert, alle waren sehr freundlich, und es ist immer schön, andere Bruce Tramps zu treffen. Wir wussten alle, dass unser Treffen mit Bruce nur wenige Sekunden dauern würde, aber das minderte unseren Spaß nicht im Geringsten. Manche Leute flogen extra hierfür nach Seattle. Wenn ich schon ziemlich verrückt erscheine, wie sieht es denn dann mit der Frau vor uns aus, die extra frühmorgens aus Boston anreiste und den günstigsten Rückflug abends um 23 Uhr mit Zwischenlandung in Chicago gebucht hatte?!

Die Bücher hat Bruce übrigens nicht gestern vor Ort signiert, die waren alle schon vorher mit Autogrammen versehen worden. Gestern war die Gelegenheit, ihn tatsächlich zu treffen, ein paar Sätze mit ihm zu reden und ein Photo mit ihm zu bekommen. Die Bilder wurden von Angestellten der Buchhandlung gemacht, und zwar mit unseren Smartphones, daher ist die Qualität nicht die beste, aber mir gefallen sie trotzdem. Bruce war sehr freundlich und schaffte es, das Gefühl zu vermitteln, dass er sich über jedes einzelne Mini-Treffen freute. Er dankte uns für unser Kommen und unsere  Unterstützung. Ich glaube nicht, dass ich da stundenlang so stehen und mit Tausenden Unbekannten Small Talk machen könnte, ohne wahnsinnig zu werden.

Bruce was not actually signing books yesterday, they were all presigned. This was an opportunity to meet him, say hi and have a picture taken. Store employees took the pictures with our cellphones, so the quality is not exactly the best but I am still very happy with how it went. Bruce was very friendly and gracious and made everyone feel that he was truly happy about meeting them, thanking all of us for coming and supporting him. I don't think I could do this for hours with thousands of strangers without losing my sanity.

It was over way too fast but I am very glad that I had this opportunity and actually got to meet him... other than grabbing him during the crowd surf in Oakland last March :)

Viel zu schnell war alles vorbei, aber ich bin froh, dass ich diese Gelegenheit hatte und ihn tatsächlich treffen durfte... nachdem ich ja schon beim Crowd Surf in Oakland im März zugegriffen hatte :)
